Ulrich Irén and Simon Manci are to pass their final exam at the grammar school. They both want to become actresses, therefore they both welcome Fonyódi Miklós's emotional overtures. The young actor is clearly impressed by Ulrich Irén, but does not give up courting Marischell Lujza, a teacher, who is a spinster and is not so young now, in the hope that her influential brother will help him get a job in one of the well-known theatres of the country. Sándor, Irén's teacher, has plans to marry her, but the girl's secret ambition and mystic private life leads to a misunderstanding between them. In the end, Fonyódi is seen as a disappointment for Irén, who then marries her teacher. Manci becomes an actress, while Fonyódi marries Lujza, who gets him a job at a theatre.
