A fairy tale featuring landlady Margaret, devil Boniface, corrupt councillors and a lazy tailor. In Hell, the devils have a quill that writes human sins into the Book of Sins and the devils go and pull the sinners down to Hell. One day, the quill stops working, and devil Boniface is sent to the Earth for a new one but a lazy tailor steals the quill from him. The devils back in Hell think nobody is sinning but up on the Earth, everything is topsy-turvy. Boniface admits to Margaret that he is responsible for the whole mess. Together, they not only save the town from destruction, but Boniface learns what true love is. (JuniorFest)

A nice and fairly entertaining fairy-tale whose negative aspects are at the same time in a weird way the strengths of the entire movie. For instance, it’s been a long time since I saw a more significant collaboration between Czech and Slovak actors, and I was really happy about it. However, I wouldn’t have expected that it would be so hard for Judit Bárdos to speak Czech. I don’t want to hold it against her. I simply found it surprising. In terms of acting and beauty, she sure is the most beautiful fairy-tale character in the past twenty years. The story is also pretty original and imaginative, but if it weren’t for the corruption in the town of Pytlov, there would be nothing for the story to narrate. And as regards humor, sometimes the movie is funny, but then all of a sudden you have nothing to laugh at for about five minutes. All in all, at first sight, I gave the movie a four-star review, but then I decided to tone it down a bit because when I thought about how excited I was walking home from the cinema after seeing Angel of the Lord 2 because I must admit that I didn’t have the feeling of a well-made fairy-tale this time.

"Are you the reason this backwater is such a mess???"Three Brothers was a funny fairy tale, The Magic Quill is a fantastical comedy. And absolutely brilliant! I’m very happy with the casting of almost all the roles, the script is both funny and makes sense, Marek Najbrt's direction has just the right shot rhythm, and the set design, including the old-school effects, is great. I laughed every once in a while and I have to admit that the comparison with Give the Devil His Due is truly merited byThe Magic Quill. Don’t let sin be your ruin!

The Magic Quill fue filmada por los creadores de Blanik Office, y se puede ver en ella. Al menos la mitad de la trama consiste en un nivel político-satírico fuertemente acentuado, que afortunadamente es bastante general y sólo depende de usted, hasta qué punto lo relaciona con la actual situación política checa. Además, sin embargo, la película no contiene nada más significativo y por lo tanto eclipsa incluso el resto del cuento de hadas, que es francamente débil y estereotipado: es puesto en movimiento por el protagonista que al principio queda arruinado (permite que le roben objetos mágicos) y luego intenta arreglarlo por el resto de la película, que es, por un lado, el perenne de una gran cantidad de cuentos de hadas checos y, lo más importante, es una trama para dos cosas. La pareja central de protagonistas no es muy interesante y, sorprendentemente, ni siquiera simpatiza, cuando él entra en acción como simplón, solo causa problemas, y ella se presenta como una hábil manipuladora, que con avidez se aprovecha de sus pretendientes y luego se convierte en un objeto vulnerable de deseo, esperando pasivamente la salvación. Ambos se enamoran el uno del otro en su primer encuentro fugaz (cuando lo considera un ladrón y le echa agua), más porque el guion requería que surgiera de esa interacción. En la segunda mitad, la historia se transforma en una serie de persecuciones no siempre del todo significativas ni muy ingeniosas, peleas y trampas, y la película no contiene nada o muy poco miedo (Lucifer es más un tipo cariñoso) y sorprendentemente, también ofrece relativamente poco humor. Está remendada por un set de filmación decente, que incluye un concepto del infierno notablemente elaborado, creatividad desgastada ocasional, varias secuencias épicas visualmente, una buena actuación aquí y allá (especialmente Ondřej Vetchý) y, sobre todo, la clara dimensión política mencionada.

El éxito del cuento de hadas está definitivamente basado en un procesamiento hábil que apunta tanto a los niños como a los adultos. Me duele un poco una cosa: me gusta mucho Jana Cinu, lo considero un actor y cantante muy talentoso, pero en este cuento todos sobresalen, excepto Cina. Tal vez sea el destino de los personajes principales positivos cuando luego son interpretados por Budař y Jeřábek. No alcanza la calidad de la legendaria "S čerty nejsou žerty", pero definitivamente se puede ver.

I consider The Magic Quill to be above average, but I must admit it’s more about the actors than the writing. It seemed a bit "trapped" at times, and it could also use a bigger dose of humor. As usual, there was singing and dancing, which is a real put-off for me in fairy tales. I enjoyed Jana Plodková’s performance in each of her scenes and I just wished she had a slightly bigger role.
