Una noche de 1990 tres hombre y tres armas coinciden en el vestíbulo de la casa del cónsul italiano en Madrid. En la casa está sólo Elena, su hija, esperando ansiosa la llega de un camello que le traerá caballo. Los tres hombres son: Víctor Plaza, (un adolescente inmaduro y marginal) y una pareja de policías, David (25 años) y Sancho (40). La televisión emite "Ensayo de un crimen" de Luis Buñuel. En otro barrio madrileño, Clara, la mujer de Sancho, riega las plantas de su terraza, inconsciente pero no ajena al drama que está ocurriendo en el vestíbulo de la casa del cónsul. Entre los tres hombres estalla una violenta discusión. Hay mucha confusión y mucho "cruce de cables". Una de las pistolas se dispara. La bala alcanza a David en plena columna vertebral. (Warner Bros. Pedro Almodóvar is not one of my favorite directors. But when I stumbled into this movie for an umpteenth time on Cinemax and saw Penélope Cruz giving birth in the bus, I decided to finish watching this. And I must say that it’s not that bad. A strange mix of love, relationships and the sometimes fateful problems related to that. Definitely a standard from Almodóvar, but for me a film that I have to watch on a special opportunity, otherwise I’d get bored pretty quickly.

Almodóvar's first film, which opened with a scene with Penélope Cruz, and stars Javier Bardem. At the bottom of the passion is the classic Spanish relationship chaos, where everyone acts like a UFO, looks like a UFO, and pretends at festivals that it's all so interesting, new, original, and somehow revelatory. Ok, then. If that's enough to make you happy, go ahead and watch a rerun.

A great example that you don't always need an elaborate script, phenomenal performances or a complex story, with a firm director’s hand, you can manage without other attributes. Almodóvar fully unleashes his typical palette of passion, emotions and explicit eroticism that will satisfy any viewer, even if the rest of the film isn't worth that much and some scenes are downright toe-curling with their theatrical overkill.
