Lowell Bergman, célebre periodista de investigación y productor del programa "60 Minutos", recibe un informe enviado por un empleado anónimo de "Philip Morris". En él se describen los efectos nocivos de la nicotina y la dependencia que crea. Bergman contacta con Jeffrey Wigand, un científico que trabaja para "Brown y Williamson", el tercer fabricante de cigarrillos de Estados Unidos.
