Monsieur Chocolat retrata el papel que la fama, el dinero fácil, el juego, la amistad y la discriminación tuvieron en la vida de Rafael Padilla, más conocido como Chocolat, el primer artista negro en aparecer en un escenario francés. El primero también en hacer publicidad, el mismo que inspiró a otros contemporáneos de la Belle Époque como Toulouse Lautrec o a los hermanos Lumière participando en varias de sus primeras películas. Junto con el payaso Foottit, interpretado por James Thierrée, fueron los primeros en crear un dúo entre un payaso "Carablanca" y un payaso "Augusto" negro, convirtiéndose en el perfecto producto de su tiempo. Chocolat nació en Cuba, aproximadamente en 1865, y siendo niño se trasladó a Europa. En España trabajó como sirviente, como limpiabotas, como obrero en la mina El destino le llevó a Francia, a trabajar en el circo. Omar Sy is starting to establish himself as one of the most interesting young French character actors. He also nailed this historical and biographical drama about the first black French clown. The film itself, however, is more of a classic biographical movie, where you get moments that you simply expect - drama with a touch of comedy with a great lead actor.

This is what a good biopic should be. The charismatic Omar Sy, starring in the title role, certainly has a lot to do with the final result. He deserves admiration for the ease with which he was able to express the wide range of emotions that portraying the first black clown required. Rafael Padilla may have enjoyed great favor with the Parisians, but his fame, built on his humiliation, quickly began to fade, and in his efforts to rise above it all, he ultimately realized how ruthless the world around him could be. The worst and saddest part of it all is that it is a true story. (85%)
