Río de Janeiro, 1950. Eurídice, de 18 años, y Guida, de 20, son dos hermanas inseparables que viven en casa con sus conservadores padres. Aunque inmersas en una vida tradicional, cada una alimenta un sueño: Eurídice el de convertirse en una pianista de renombre, Guida el de encontrar el amor verdadero. En un giro dramático, son separadas por su padre y obligadas a vivir en lugares distintos. Tendrán que tomar así el control de sus propios destinos, sin perder la esperanza de volver a encontrarse. Una separación que no tenía que ser existido. Desde el punto de vista de la historia, para mí la película más fuerte de esta edición de Cannes. Una película que no habría ido a ver después de leer la sinopsis, pero después de ganar la sección «Otro punto de vista», por curiosidad no pude resistir. Hollywood no trabaja con las emociones de forma tan directa. El dolor y la compasión que se siente por los personajes no hace llorar, pero pesa en el corazón, incluso asfixia. Y no puedes ayudarte a ti mismo porque no tienes forma de ayudar a los personajes. Una película hermosa. [Cannes]

Melodramas aren’t my thing, but when they are so beautiful and perfectly honed, they are hard to resist. The main theme is patriarchal oppression played out in the story of two sisters who were separated from each other, and gratuitously so, only due of the malice of the men around them. It’s quite refreshing to see a story that’s not centred around the love of a couple, but around sisterly love. #KVIFF2019

Invisible Life is a subtly crafted melodrama where the creators let the emotions flow naturally through the telling of a powerful story, without resorting to any sentimental gimmicks. This is an extremely sad film about how one youthful indiscretion and a few lies changed the lives of two inseparable sisters for good. It sounds frightening that if it weren't for the men and prejudices deeply rooted in Brazilian society at the time, their separation might never have happened. The realistic, almost naturalistic portrayal combined with the beautiful piano music, which could have made Eurídice happy under better circumstances, was enough to make me shed tears in the last ten minutes of this touching spectacle.
