El capo de la mafia Paul Vitti (Robert de Niro) está a punto de terminar su condena en Sing Sing, y los agentes del FBI que le controlan están desconcertados. Día tras día observan cómo el personaje del hampa más famoso de Nueva York pasea por su celda sumido en un estado de aletargamiento catatónico, mientras tararea canciones de West Side Story. ¿Sufrirá Vitti una crisis nerviosa por las recientes amenazas de una familia rival o será una estratagema para salir de la cárcel antes de tiempo? Ni el FBI ni su antiguo psiconalista Ben Sobel (Billy Crystal) están seguros. Los primeros 20 minutos son geniales, muy prometedores. Pero una vez repartidas las cartas, el guionista ya no sabe qué es un as y qué es una sota. Y el director Harold Ramis parece estar un poco aburrido. Los actores son excelentes, Robert De Niro vuelve a sobresalir. Merece la pena ver algunos chistes, pero en general la película es una media estrella más floja que la original Una terapia peligrosa.

The second film suffers from the same ailment as its predecessor. Watching Paul Vitti's softened mobster, divinely played by Robert De Niro, brilliantly parodying his most famous tough-guy mafia poses, means that you will be swept up in never-ending humorous intoxication. Yet the moment a more serious level comes into play (the rivalry of the Italian families for power), Ramis suspiciously starts to have issues because it is clear that he is not very confident in these waters. The ending is such a below-average attempt at a combination of action, wit, and some sort of point that drags the whole previous effort down into mediocrity.

It's still watchable and relatively funny in the beginning, but the more the runtime progresses, the more the polished dialogue in the style of the first episode is abandoned in favour of slapstick. Qualitatively completely unworthy of its older sibling, but still a passable comedy. Only that it’s not that funny.
