1944: Tras sufrir un accidente, Walter, un joven soldado alemán, es enviado a una pequeña unidad en los bosques polacos rodeada de guerrilleros partisanos. Pronto se debate entre el sentido del deber, la culpa y su propia conciencia, un conflicto interior que se agravará tras enamorarse de Wanda, una guerrillera polaca. Walter juró defender sus votos militares, pero no puede obedecer a la crueldad de algunas instrucciones que recibe, y tampoco entiende qué sentido tiene batallar en una guerra que ya está perdida. A war drama in which there is no fighting that makes your blood run cold, and yet it speaks volumes about war. And I certainly don't begrudge the film a bit of romance combined with beautiful music. When else to encounter a fateful love than in a heightened time when life is at stake? The first part is more engaging and suspenseful than the second, but overall, the story of a German deserter to the Red Army captivated me enough to remember it for a long time. (80%)
