Freddie Clegg es un tímido empleado del Banco de Londres, introvertido y triste, que se siente víctima de la sociedad. Aficionado a coleccionar mariposas, su vida cambia bruscamente cuando acierta un pleno en las quinielas. Se compra una gran mansión en las afueras de Londres y aparece en él un fuerte deseo sexual que le lleva a secuestrar a Miranda Grey, una joven estudiante de bellas artes, de mayor posición social que él, por la que se siente atraído desde hace tiempo. Pretende que al pasar una temporada juntos, se conozcan mejor y que con el trato ella se acabe enamorando de él. Pero Miranda se rebela contra su secuestro ya que Freddie retiene a la chica atada en el sótano de su casa durante un mes, un tiempo en el que en los dos personajes afloran todo tipo de sentimientos hasta que se produce el fatal desenlace. A young psychopath collects not only butterflies, but also women. He is unable to make physical contact with them, but likes to watch them and demands their attention. Unfortunately, at the cost of imprisoning them in his home, which, as you will admit, is not very conventional, and the girl he is imprisoning thinks the same. Terence Stamp as the emotionally deprived, icy-faced psycho is superb. But what surprises everyone, at least me, and not pleasantly, is the unusual ending.

One of the best abduction thrillers ever! Even though it’s a bit too long and it could be cut down a little, it didn’t bore me even for an instant. The sleazy psychopath Terence Stamp delivers a great performance, his character is very interesting, well fleshed-out and credible, he’s not just an average maniac with unclear motivations. His victim also behaves quite reasonably, something unprecedented. 85%
