Hijo ilegítimo de una mujer que se vio obligada a abandonarle poco después de nacer, Tom Jones fue criado por el señor Allworthy, el propietario de la mayor hacienda de la comarca. Cuando crece se enamora de la hermosa Sophie Western pero es incapaz de resistirse a otras mujeres.
