Durante unas horas todos los habitantes de Midwich, un tranquilo pueblo costero, pierden el conocimiento. Poco tiempo después, se produce otro inquietante y extraño fenómeno que parece estar relacionado con aquel desmayo: la mayor parte de las mujeres de Midwich se han quedado embarazadas. El médico de la localidad (Christopher Reeve), cuya mujer también está encinta, y una cientifica (Kirstie Alley), enviada por el gobierno, deciden estudiar el caso a partir del momento en que los niños empiezan a mostrar una conducta tan sobrenatural como inhumana. John Carpenter modernizó y comercializó el material clásico. El brillo de los ojos de los niños parece más sexy, la imagen en blanco y negro fue sustituida por los entornos y trajes de vivos colores de los protagonistas, y la película cuenta con un amplio elenco de estrellas. Pero ni siquiera eso fue suficiente. Porque aunque intentó envolverlo todo en un manto de lúgubre misterio, véase su banda sonora tradicionalmente oscura, el resultado carece por completo de la atmósfera del original. Es como si el propio Carpenter hubiera sido hipnotizado por uno de los niños durante el rodaje. Probablemente sea interesante sólo para los fanáticos de La guerra de las galaxias si quisieran ver a Mark Hamill en el papel de un sacerdote neurótico.

An inoffensive adaptation of Wyndham's classic that suffers from a slightly softened Carpenter who seems to have run out of bizarre ideas for disposing of people, which is quite unfortunate because the material was perfect for it. It’s not boring, but I did forget it after a few days.

A bad B-movie in the spirit of the bad B-movies of the 1950s. A deadly serious but ultimately unintentionally ridiculous plot, clueless actors and a few interesting scenes, but you should probably just watch them on YouTube and not bother with the whole film.

Given the distaste with which Carpenter approached this film, I'm quite inclined to think that at some point he just stopped coming to the set, so the rest of the crew just shot close-ups of the child actors' faces in each location and then edited the result from there. Then if there's one thing the script completely resigned itself to, it's translating the 1950s subject matter into the 1990s and American realities (a California village becomes a zone where everyone falls into a deep sleep for six hours and it doesn't leak to the media, yeah right). The highlights are the performances by Mark Hamill and Christopher Reeve, which could knock you off your horse.
