Sinopsis(1)
Dos aventureros compañeros de universidad norteamericanos, Paxton y Josh, recorren Europa con sus mochilas ansiosos de que les quede un turbio recuerdo de su viaje con su nuevo amigo Oli, un islandés al que han conocido por el camino. En un principio distraídos por lo bien que se lo están pasando, los dos norteamericanos se ven rápidamente inmersos en una situación cada vez más siniestra, y que, como descubrirán más tarde, es tan profunda como el más oscuro y enfermizo recoveco de la propia naturaleza humana si sobreviven. No me molestó la representación de Eslovaquia, al contrario, me hizo verdadera gracia. Pero me sorprendió bastante la cantidad de suciedad envuelta en la campaña con súper carteles, el eslogan «Quentin Tarantino Presents» y 20 millones de ventas iniciales en Estados Unidos. Hostel podría haber sido realizado con la misma calidad por un director eslovaco medio con un presupuesto 10 veces inferior. Algunas escenas se suceden como improvisadas, sin guión. Atmósfera cero, gradación asesinada por una aburrida previsibilidad. Esperamos insoportablemente las escenas de crueldad, que, por cierto, son muchas menos de las prometidas. Este tipo de películas se hacían a salto de mata en los años 80 y hoy no hay perro que les ladre. La historia se repite. La única ventaja de Hostel es lo mucho que resalta las cualidades de dirección y guión de películas como Saw.

Absolutní kravina, humus a debilovina. Lo peor de todo es que durante una conversación con una estudiante francesa de historia, me enteré de que realmente creyó que así es como se ve en Eslovaquia, e incluso en la República Checa. ¡Así que gracias Eli Rothe, por promocionar nuestro país de esa manera!

As a ten-minute amateur movie, it would have worked, but as a feature-length movie it barely works at all. Nothing whatsoever happens for an hour; then there are a few minutes of decent fun (at least for the Czechoslovaks among us - the locations) and then again total boredom until the end credits. There is only one good scene in the whole movie, which is not enough... The characters are utterly bland, as are the actors, as is the directing. The only good moment is Miike’s cameo.

One of the biggest injustices on Filmbooster. Hostel is not a turning-point in modern horror, and if it wanted to be among the best of the genre, it would have to offer a lot more. That said, it is a slightly above-average film that has the misfortune of having been watched by people who shouldn’t watch this kind of stuff. If you expect being afraid or scared by an exploitation film, the problem is yours and not the film’s.

There is no doubt that we are in the realm of dumbfounded trash here. When I read these derogatory comments, where stinging remarks abound, I say to myself, how everything is relative, because the same users can effortlessly give a similar, and I dare say even worse film, five stars and a comment from which one feels the concept of a "guilty pleasure." Also worth mentioning is that Hostel by Eli Roth is a cult film overseas. On internet forums, teenagers who are horror fans drool over Hostel in delight. The distorted realities of Slovakia are of no concern to them, so while we get angry about obvious stupidity, we Central Europeans are willing to believe in cannibals in Texas or mutants in the deserts of the Midwest. Overall impression: 10%.
