El padre y el tío de las dos hermanas Bolena, Ana y María, empujados por el ambicioso deseo de mejorar el nivel social y el poder de la familia, convencen a sus hijas para que conquisten el afecto del Rey de Inglaterra. Las jóvenes dejan atrás su vida en el campo para trasladarse al peligroso y apasionante mundo de la corte. Pero las buenas intenciones de las hermanas al querer ayudar a su familia se convierten pronto en una rivalidad sin cuartel para obtener el amor del Rey. En un principio, gana María, a la que el Rey escoge como amante y con la que tiene un bastardo. Pero Ana es inteligente, astuta, no teme a nada, y consigue apartar a su hermana y a la legítima esposa del Rey, la reina Catalina de Aragón. Ana no se detendrá hasta ser coronada Reina de Inglaterra. Mientras las hermanas Bolena luchan por los favores del Rey, una por amor, otra por ambición, Inglaterra es presa de luchas internas. Divertida, rápida y nada aburrida. Pero el atributo de «película histórica repleta de estrellas» es falso. Se trata más bien de otra farsa histórica «moderna» de (Elizabeth: La Edad de Oro), que salta de un evento al siguiente solo para acelerar el ritmo y solo se enfoca secundariamente en la historia y sus personajes. Intrigas, amor, traición y manipulación son presentados por Justin Chadwick a la manera de Crueles intenciones en lugar de un drama de época serio. Las hermanas Bolena parece una película seria y es realmente impresionante solo en esos pocos momentos en los que Ana Torrent (la Reina Catalina) está frente a la cámara.

The cleverly written story benefits mainly from the pair of actresses in the main roles and plays with the viewer in such a way that first the first one is likeable, then the second, then both, then a moment later neither of them... And finally... Let’s just say it's worth it. In the Scarlett X Natalie battle, the latter did it for me this time (which I was surprised by), Eric Bana is fit to be the king, and Kristin Scott Thomas' mother is clearly the leader of the supporting characters. I praise the costumes, the cinematography and the music, but I don't praise the almost two-hour runtime, which seemed unnecessarily long about fifteen minutes before the end. Still giving it four stars, though.

The performances are very interesting, especially Natalie Portman, who plays both the delicate Scarlett and the masculine Banu. However, The Other Boleyn Girl is surprisingly a dry historical drama with an unusual editing for a historical film. It does have the traditional trademarks like several poetic shots of wheat waving in the wind. The cinematography is beautiful, the work with lighting is excellent, but otherwise this film, despite its attractive look at first glance, comes across as a rather uninteresting fresco. It needed a more experienced director.

No naive infatuation in the fight against difficult times, no fateful confession that will forever remain in you. The king's favor takes the path of uncompromisingness, where romantic ideals are suffocated in the bud, love promises end with only one resolute command, and a child is not always just the fulfillment of a relationship. Desperate romantics, therefore, must get a magnifying glass for the projection, to find their own and be able to leave satisfied, but those who tune in to the wave of intrigues and desperate efforts will undoubtedly enjoy this royal spectacle.

The story of the Boleyn siblings, and it’s also incidentally about Henry VIII. It’s an excellent treatment that opens up the path to The Tudors series in a great way. For viewers who aren’t fans of history, they may just see some unexpected dramatic twists. ;)
