Skins

- the first generation, or the first two season – Skins was peculiarly nominated for a bunch of awards in drama categories, but not comedy. Despite the misleading or, said more precisely, enticing first episode, this is not a teen comedy built around the usual motifs of losing one’s virginity and out-of-control parties. With each subsequent episode, the drama further crystalises as it focuses on relationships and developing the individual characters. The series has a clever dramaturgical concept by which each episode focuses on a different character. Thanks to that, all of the characters outlined in the first episode (the stoner, the virgin, the sex kitten, the confident show-off, the basket case) get their own personality and ambiguity, as well as their own conflicts, feelings and desires. Both in its characters’ natures and in the chosen style, Skins remains entirely faithful to its target audience. Whereas all of the adult characters, i.e. parents and teachers, are portrayed as caricatures in accordance with the way that teenagers see them, the adolescent protagonists are fully developed without any prejudices or pre-determined patterns. In the case of the first generation of the series, this means that the protagonists do not fit into any outsider or rebel subculture; they are in fact the core members of the class who devote their free time mainly to copulating. Parties, smoking weed and popping pills are only the backdrop for the main thing that makes the world of teenagers go round – intensely dramatic relationships, which are the be-all and end-all of the whole series. In addition to that, particularly the second season of the first generation of Skins brilliantly depicts the end of the last year of high school as a bittersweet time permeated with the feeling that comes with the approaching end and fear of the pain arising from conflicts and the collapse of idealistic plans. Skins is a series about young people and for young people that is in every aspect (including style and great music) uniquely faithful to its target group, but it cannot be said that is naïve. Melancholía. Opresión. Sensación de malestar. Estas emociones me dominaron en casi cada episodio de esta maravillosa serie británica. Olvídate de Beverly Hills, O.C. o Melrose Place. Skins es única porque no le ofrece al espectador un desfile de estudiantes guapos, ricos y exitosos que viven en lujosas mansiones y se entretienen con intrigas o comportamientos promiscuos. Todos los personajes son creíbles y lidian con problemas que son cercanos al espectador común. Por supuesto, se trata de relaciones amorosas, pero también de lidiar con la propia sexualidad, el amor, la decepción, un entorno familiar desolador, problemas en la escuela y la búsqueda de uno mismo. Una gran ventaja es el enfoque absolutamente único de los productores, cada generación de personajes tiene espacio solo para dos temporadas, después viene un cambio completo de reparto, lo cual es completamente único en estos tiempos en que los productores ponen mucho énfasis en la popularidad de los personajes entre los espectadores. Muchas personas valoran positivamente solo la primera generación, es decir, las primeras dos temporadas. Yo tengo una opinión contraria. Me gustaron las tres generaciones, cada una tenía algo especial, aunque el grupo alrededor de Tony, Sid o Michelle fue realmente inolvidable. Personalmente, las personajes de la segunda generación me llamaron más la atención, específicamente Cook y Effy. Cook es un personaje que el espectador debe amar o odiar, tal vez ambos, pero sin duda no le quedará indiferente. Effy tiene mucho encanto, encanto, pero al mismo tiempo dolor y tristeza. En la tercera generación, me encariñé con Alo, porque él trajo un toque de humor a esta serie más bien triste. No entiendo bien qué tienen planeado los creadores de la serie en el futuro, ya que la séptima temporada fue completamente diferente con el regreso de Effy, Cook y Cassie, y narra sus vidas posteriores ya en el mundo adulto. Si los creadores querían cerrar la serie, entiendo por qué eligieron a Effy y Cook, pero no entiendo la elección de Cassie. Personalmente, me gustaría que la serie tuviera otras dos temporadas y que regresaran otros personajes, incluso de la tercera generación. (17.03.2014)
