El famoso bailarín Guy Holden (Fred Astaire) conoce fortuitamente a Mimi Glossop (Ginger Rogers) en el vestíbulo de un hotel cuando ella ha tenido un golpe de mala suerte al quedarse su vestido enganchado a una maleta. Desde ese primer encuentro Guy no logrará quitarse a Mimi de la cabeza. Mimi por su parte está casada pero busca divorciarse, por lo que contrata al abogado Egbert Fitzgerald (Edward Everett Horton), amigo íntimo de Guy. Mientras Guy trata de localizar a mimi para confesarle su flechazo por ella, Mimi desarrollará una trama para lograr divorciarse. Cuando Guy por fin logra encontrar a Mimi se desarrollarán una serie de imprevistos que pondrán los planes de Mimi patas arriba. (Filmin)
