A remote, storm-swept island, a population of evolutionary throwbacks, a forbidding Medieval monastery, a strange religious order, ancient, undying evil. After the death of her father, a beautiful Londoner travels to a desolate island to investigate the dead man's bequest of a large sum of money to be paid annually to the reclusive nuns of a local convent. Given little information from the secretive sisterhood or their blind Mother Superior, Elizabeth strikes out on her own with the aid of a helpful novice and discovers the convent serves as a prison for an ancient aquatic demon whose awful wrath is held at bay only so long as the fragments of a stone amulet bearing the monster's horrific likeness are kept separated. Me impresionó mucho el ambiente cautivador del monasterio de la isla, los pasillos llenos de velas y las habitaciones misteriosas. Todo esto construye una atmósfera gótica muy decente. En su estructura, Dark Waters recuerda a la buena escuela italiana, y varias veces mientras la veía pensé en Suspiria de Argento, pero también en La centinela de Winner, especialmente al final. La película tiene muchas similitudes con esta última en particular. En otras palabras, aunque Dark Waters es una síntesis de todo lo que hemos visto en otras películas de terror, está bien hecha y es entretenida.

I’ve just experienced an unprecedented shock. Yesterday in horrorplace I noticed a comment about this film and it caught my attention, so I procured it and immediately put it on, and I’m shocked that almost nobody’s heard of this perfect horror flick. An island far from civilisation, an old monastery, an order of mysterious nuns, underground corridors, candles, burning crosses, some sort of dreadful “creature”… really, It’d be hard to find a better horror atmosphere. Dark Waters doesn’t waste time with any boring introductions, it goes at full speed from the start and doesn’t let down for a moment. By the end I felt my heart was trying to burst out of my chest. Really, I won’t spare superlatives for this film, it’s a must see for horror fans.
