Sinopsis(1)
Matthew Hopkins es el cazador de brujas más importante de Inglaterra. Viaja prestando sus servicios donde lo llaman y aprovechándose de los eventuales juicios (a través de los placeres carnales que le podían brindar aquellas jovencitas acusadas de brujería que querían vivir un poco más). En uno de estos pueblos, Hopkins y su secuaz torturan a un párroco acusado de brujería y obtiene de su sobrina unos favores sexuales a cambio del perdón al párroco. Pero al día siguiente el cura es ajusticiado junto con otra acusada. El novio de la chica, un soldado de Oliver Cromwell, jura vengar tanto la destrucción de su futuro suegro como la impurificación de su inmaculada novia. Para ello se casa con ella con Dios como testigo y parte para cumplir sus deberes de soldado y estar atento a la presencia de Hopkins en las aldeas que visita. (Filmin)

There are comparisons between this film and our own Witchhammer all over the internet. Why not, but unfortunately for the British, Vávra's film is infinitely better. While Witchfinder General tells the same story and conveys the same horrific experience to the viewer (the absolutely impassive stares of the crowd watching the burning are sheer terror), it is not nearly as evocatively disgusting and authentic from start to finish. It's as if the filmmakers were afraid to tell the story of the witch trials "just because," so they wrapped the story in a fairly classically conceived adventure story with a romantic plot. It's certainly not bad, but I was expecting something a little different. I don't need to mention that Vincent Price (whom I would hardly recognize) is amazing.
