Bus Stop

Positive mood must be dosed and not poured by liters. It is nice that Don Murray is such a rough guy, constantly shouting, he hasn't seen a girl even from a train and confuses her with a calf, especially when the divine Marilyn is the object of his desire. But when one unfunny joke after another is built around his boorishness and beauty and his gruffness, it stops being nice in any direction. In addition, the ending is too naive even for a romantic comedy from the golden fifties. (09.07.2007)

Bus Stop is a fascinating experience. In the most negative sense of the word. Watching this film can only be compared to the feelings of a real freak show or the phenomenon of watching traffic accidents. I've gotten used to the fact that Marilyn Monroe only had success when she pushed the envelope. Over the years she'd gone from being an iconic blonde to a parody of that type of girl, but what she added to her acting after her Actors Studio experience is something awful. It's not entirely relevant that the script was based on William Inge's 1955 play of the same name, nor that Inge was only developing themes from his one-act play "People in the Wind," but the fact that Bus Stop was the first project of MM Production, the company that also made The Prince and the Showgirl. While Don Murray's raw acting tends to be excused by the fact that this was his debut, there aren't many excuses for Marilyn Monroe. (16.03.2009)
