Jennifer Corvino, la hija de un famoso actor de Hollywood, llega a un internado femenino que se encuentra en las montañas que rodean Zürich. La Academia Richard Wagner resulta ser un lugar misterioso, según le cuenta una compañera de cuarto a Jennifer: varias chicas han sido asesinadas en la zona y encontradas con la cabeza separada del cuerpo. Coincidiendo con su ingreso, vuelven a suceder una serie de brutales asesinatos cometidos por un psicópata anónimo que parece tener una especial preferencia por las alumnas del colegio. Jennifer es sonámbula y durante una de sus salidas nocturnas presencia el brutal asesinato de una compañera de internado, por lo que se ve implicada en el caso y obligada a ayudar a descubrir al criminal. Además tiene poderes telepáticos, que utiliza para intentar desenmascarar al sádico que aterroriza a sus compañeras y descubrir qué terrible secreto encierran los muros del internado. (Movistar+)

Phenomena es menos sangrienta que otras películas de Argento y se centra más en la historia y la atmósfera que en los efectos visuales. Lo cual es un gran punto a favor. Jennifer Connelly y Donald Pleasence fueron una buena elección, y el hipnótico misterio de los insectos combinado con la música psicodélica y el maravilloso y aislante entorno alpino funciona a las mil maravillas. Si no fuera por algunas pequeñas objeciones, ¡sería una joya del género!

Monty Python presents: Phenomena – Revenge of the Chimp… Wait, it wasn’t a parody? I'm amazed what kind of horrible nonsense the diehard Argento fans are willing to put up with. Exactly as Fulci said: Argento is a skilled director of eye-popping scenes, but a terrible screenwriter. All that was missing was that the killer was the chimpanzee, and actually, in the context of the events in the film, I wouldn't be surprised. After all, his entrance with a razor at the very end was the cherry on top.

If you’re willing to accept that the female lead can communicate with insects that help her go after a dangerous killer, you will have fulfilled the main condition to enjoy this film. Another condition is high tolerance for bad acting (Jennifer and the Professor are OK, the rest are KO) – some of the stuff those actors have to say reaches almost parody levels. The atmosphere is decent overall – the Alps do their job – but it’s such a shame that about half of the potentially scary scenes are ruined by music that is terrible for horror, the choice of which I really can’t understand. The last half hour, when things finally get going a little, improves the otherwise mixed feelings. It’s one of those films that I believe warrants a remake.
