Into the Woods

Probably one of the most stupid musicals the Americans have ever managed to shoot. The one star is for the wonderful digital effects, which created a very nice fairytale environment. But that’s the end of it. Not even the bunch of actors who performed here deserve anything else. Basically, I would compare Into the Woods with the Czech film Three Brothers, while Three Brothers had at least some decent music. The Americans mixed the most well-known fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm, which they brush up on year after year because they can squeeze outnew material out of them literally indefinitely. Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, etc… They added a few completely uninteresting melodies, brutally boring lyrics, and actors who should have said no to this movie. Two hours of musical hell. A creative and pleasantly elevated journey to the intersection of all fairy tales that forgot to end. With a slight irony, the ageless Meryl Streep, the unwavering Anna Kendrick, or that discovery Lilla Crawford sing and perform a lot better from the seeming ending to the full ending. However, this original idea ends up an ultimate failure because it desperately misses the effect. A more serious note is only achieved at very suspicious points, supporting characters disappear from the plot, and the plot itself as declared in the prologue never reappears. When the princes were so agitatedly singing "Agony!!", I hoped that the rest would alternate with functioning emotionally like Enchanted. That makes it all the more puzzling to only get halfway there. And no one likes to be only halfway there. Especially not in the forest. (08.04.2015)

I really like this sort of thing – singing, new renditions of fairy tales and so on and so forth. It's just that this was so boring, the songs were cheesy and "un-catchy". I wanted to turn it off halfway through, but I lasted until the end, though I’m still wondering why. I guess I was hoping for something more, but it never came, until suddenly the closing credits were there and my head was hurting. If I'd gone to the cinema to see it, I probably would have cried that I'd wasted my money in the worst way possible. (25.01.2015)

I expected much more from it than I actually got. Meryl Streep didn't disappoint, but she didn't impress either, Johnny Depp's minimal contribution didn't really bother me. The way different fairy tales are combined here is quite functional, but as a musical, this film simply didn't work for me and it didn't entertain me. There are no songs that really captivated me, which is a shame because the plot often relied on them. (26.01.2015)
