Cuando Winston Churchill era niño, sus padres estaban tan volcados en sus respectivas actividades que no le prestaron apenas atención alguna. Siguiendo los deseos de su padre, un prestigioso político conservador (tory), se alistó en el ejército y participó en la guerra anglo-bóer (1899-1902), donde estuvo a punto de morir.
