Helsinki. Khaled, un joven inmigrante sirio, llega oculto de polizón en un barco de carga procedente de Polonia. Mientras, un comercial anodino llamado Wikström decide poner fin a su matrimonio, cambiar de negocio y abrir un restaurante poco frecuentado. Sus caminos se cruzarán y Wikström ofrecerá a Khaled techo, comida y trabajo. Pero el sueño del chico es encontrar a su hermana, que también huyó de Siria. (Golem Distribución)

¡Qué maravilla de diálogos! ¡Y qué personajes! Te hemos echado de menos, Aki. Humor seco nórdico, remilgo cómico intencional, personajes de caricaturista, la capacidad de expresarse acertadamente y sinceramente sobre un problema más global. Estados Unidos tiene a Woody Allen, Escandinavia a Kaurismäki.

I had no idea that Finns are such immigrant sympathizers. They even let them in, communicate with them and tend to offer them jobs. Seriously? I thought that a Finn is a more private being and does not do anything mentioned above for other Finns, let alone for immigrants… But fine, let’s forget about immigration policies and concentrate more on Aki Kaurismäki. He showed off with an ironic comedy good as usual, with some aspects of drama, which maintains the comedy nature with its absurdity. It is funny from start to finish and not just thanks to the cynical dialogues, but also the nicely done camera work, entertaining even when it just stands still. I regret that I am not in Finland. I would happily visit a similar distillery for one Kukko olut. Well, one Czech beer waiting for me in half an hour will have to do.

Dos historias entrelazadas, tan diferentes entre sí que ni siquiera parece posible conectarlas. Juzgue usted mismo: por un lado, un drama serio sobre un refugiado sirio que intenta obtener asilo en Finlandia y busca a su hermana, que se perdió en algún lugar cerca de la frontera con Hungría, y por otro lado una comedia absurda sobre un hombre de negocios de edad avanzada que deja a su esposa vende una tienda de camisetas y compra un restaurante de cuarta con personal equivalente. En el último tercio de la película, Aki Kaurismäki se las arregló para combinar de manera muy natural los dos eventos en una mezcla cómico-dramática sonriente y consciente, en el que encontrará declaraciones sobre la crisis de los refugiados, así como chistes secos que no aportan nada. Hay algunas cosas adicionales (por ejemplo, los tres personajes de cabezas rapadas estereotipadas), pero en realidad son solo detalles menores.

Apparently, I am not enough of an intellectual to be able to enjoy this film. There was some occasional humor here and there (with emphasis on the word occasional), a few scenes got me interested, but the rest of it felt dull and dragged on like the week before payday.

Essentially, it's again about the stories of people living on the margins of society but presented with such lightness and humor that after watching the film, you simply can't be in a bad mood. (85%)
