Joey Summerskill, un periodista, presencia en un hospital la horrible muerte de un joven que llevaba cadenas hundidas en su cuerpo. Junto al chico se encontraba Terry, a la que Joey entrevista para sacar más información. Posteriormente, entre ellos empieza a surgir una relación sentimental a la par que deciden investigar el porqué de la muerte del amigo de Terry, que podría estar en una caja negra. Joey y Terry se van a la tienda de arte de la que podría haber salido la sospechosa caja negra, pero se encuentra que lleva cerrada tiempo. Tras forzar la puerta, descubren en el historial que la caja fue enviada desde un hospital psiquiátrico, donde seguirán la pista que les llevará a conocer el verdadero terror que guarda la caja.
