Día de lluvia en Nueva York

It is evident that Woody Allen is still in the game. He creates great dialogues that make sense. Moreover he is still able to get solid actors who are evidently showing themselves off in this movie. For example Elle Fanning who portrays a naive little girl here. It is all highly artsy and otherworldly. When you watch it for the first time it is quite overwhelming to the senses but after a few weeks you won’t even know you have watched it at all. (07.09.2020)

Not an over-produced self-indulgent coloring book, but instead the best Woody Allen film since Midnight in Paris. Timothée Chalamet's versatile talent fits the rainy streets of New York to a tee, and perhaps it is exactly that light-hearted posing in art galleries, parties, filmmakers, and reminiscing about decades-old art that is so accurately and pleasantly reflected on his melancholic face. I can't deny that the same jokes are made about the same topics for the umpteenth time, as are the relationship complications, but when the result is such a well-crafted introspective romantic comedy, I will gladly give it a go for the fifty-first time. Who would have thought that just A Rainy Day in New York would be the Allen's movie that gets the ax? I don't want to comment on that case, but I'm glad that the film itself is still a classic Allen from recent years, formally and stylistically fitting in among all those proven pieces that Allen has created since 2000. Nothing is missing, everything is here - traditional sophisticated work with music, love for New York, beautifully chatty characters, intertwined relationships, interesting life perspectives. One girl is blonde, the other is a brunette. He is young and unspoiled and has a fascinating mother. Unexpected things happen behind the scenes. And in New York it keeps raining and raining... Beautiful and intoxicating. As always. (21.12.2022)

New York in a romantic vibe, milked to the max. Allen is a little weaker this time and too laconic in story creation, but typically lively and topical in dialogue, and some of the scenes are full of life's truths and paradoxes. By far the most interesting are the characters who appear on the scene only briefly but have an absolutely crucial impact on the development of the story (Diego Luna, Kelly Rohrbach). Woody doesn't pull as hard on the reins this time as in his other films, but it's still light and fun fare for a Saturday afternoon. (01.08.2020)

If you can't do better, a normal life will do. Another beautiful Woody Allen film, and I couldn't care less how many other beautiful Woody Allen films it reminded me of. I spent an hour and a half enjoying the lightness and the great performances (like Elle Fanning's hiccupping – the increasingly dazed yet cute Elle Fanning is particularly amazing). (07.10.2019)

After the hysterical and overly theatrical Wonder Wheel comes the steady and more grounded A Rainy Day in New York, which impresses mainly with its old-school feel, well written characters and brisk script. On the one hand, there's the earnest intellectual Gatsby, who clings to a time long gone. On the other is the slightly goofy and whimsical Ashleigh, a girl from Arizona who's completely out of her depth in New York. The two of them independently experience many surprises in the rainy metropolis, which may not be written by life itself, or by the master of dialogue himself, Woody Allen, who, even at more than eighty years old, proves that he is still in his prime and knows how to entertain the viewer in a non-violent way (30.12.2019)

Domingo, tengo una fiesta, ¿a dónde más debería ir con mi amada chica que al cine a ver la nueva película de Woody Allen, cuya distribución fue frenada por el escándalo que afectó a muchos artistas en Estados Unidos? Woody Allen seguirá siendo mi director y guionista favorito para siempre, y si esta fuera su última obra, sería una despedida más que digna de una carrera infinitamente larga. Un clásico cóctel melancólico-romántico de Woody, con su inteligente humor, una serie de líneas en las que se requiere un buen conocimiento de los hechos por parte de sus espectadores y seguidores, una excelente música, cámara, la inconfundible atmósfera de su amada ciudad y lo que no se puede olvidar: las excelentes actuaciones de la generación más joven de actores físicamente atractivos. Chalamet y Fanning se complementan perfectamente y personalmente me sorprendió gratamente un Liev Schreiber más orientado a la acción. Y me rompí la cabeza pensando qué papel le iba a dar Woody a Kelly Rohrbach, hm, hm, hm, bueno, está claro, podría haberlo adivinado :-) (29.09.2019)

Woody Allen cannot be denied a unique style and, above all, a remarkable flair for natural dialogue, which he uses to demonstrate his characters' motives in a very sensitive and kind way. Although his latest film is set in the big-city backdrop of present-day New York, there is an ever-present kind of warm retro atmosphere that can be interpreted as one of Woody's other nostalgic sighs of relief, or as a benevolent hope. A hope that even in these overexposed times it pays to listen to the voice of one's heart, despite social pressures or expectations from one's immediate surroundings. In fact, A Rainy Day in New York is one of Allen's most optimistic films. While it takes place in a kind of bitterly melancholic haze, it contains no heated or emotionally draining conflicts. Just a pleasant film that caresses the soul and the heart. (23.08.2020)

Woody Allen, a tireless cinematic storyteller with a wonderful sense of poetry, restraint, and comic detail, tries to present New York in all its beauty, attractiveness, nakedness, and depravity through a newly-in-love couple full of ideals. However, the young couple pays for their emotional immaturity. With this film, Allen proves once again that he is one of the masters of dialogue and multi-layered stories. (75%) (16.01.2022)
