Sinopsis(1)
En el año 1943, un campamento japonés de prisioneros recibe un nuevo contingente de presos encabezado por el coronel inglés Nicholson, que desde el primer momento se enfrenta dialécticamente al coronel nipón Saito. Atraídos por su mutuo respeto al modo de vida militar, y tras una dura etapa de tensión entre ambos -que repercute directamente en la crueldad con que se trata a los prisioneros-, ambos terminan colaborando en el levantamiento del estratégico "Ferrocarril de la muerte". La construcción del puente sobre el río se convertirá en una cuestión de honor para Nicholson y sus hombres, aunque, mientras tanto, el Estado Mayor británico ha encargado a un comando especial la demolición de la obra, que facilita al enemigo el suministro de materiales esenciales.
