After three years of wait, Timur Bekmambetov’s (Wanted, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) Profile has finally seen the light of the internet and as expected it's decent, but I was expecting it to be at least a bit more frantic and crazy at the end. I liked the similar Searching more, but I like these Skype thrillers, and this one has an interesting topic, Islamists! The story focuses on the beautiful Valene Kane who, as an investigative journalist, sets up a fake Facebook profile and poses as a Muslim. Soon she is contacted by Bilel, a member of ISIS. Her job is to get from him details about the recruitment of girls converted to Islam is going, but of course things go quite wrong. The whole film takes place entirely on Facebook and via Skype, which may not be to everyone's taste, but it's got a decently oppressive atmosphere, a few minor twists and turns, some pretty decent emotions, and it's well acted and even slightly uncomfortable at the end. Those who have seen Caliphate and similar films about Islam won't be surprised by much, but the uninitiated viewer may be surprised by the reality. I was a bit disappointed by the occasional lack of clarity, at times the plot moves forward really fast and there is a lot on screen (Facebook messages, subtitles, notes, three different calls at once! ), and the finale felt too rushed, but satisfaction prevails. The film is also based on true events and definitely worth the time. 7/10. (04.06.2021)

Profile is an absorbing thriller that, thanks to the form of computer desktop recording (see, for example, the Czech series Semestr or the Bekmambetov-produced horror film Unfriended), superbly escalates both the tension and the emotions. Profile is captivating not only as a dramatisation of real events, but also as a deeply felt picture of the emotional turbulence experienced by a journalist who, due to her reporting, establishes contact with an ISIS recruiter through a fake online profile. Un aspirante a periodista de investigación decide sobre la marcha infiltrarse en los reclutadores del ISIS a través de Facebook y Skype sin tener el equipo, la formación y la protección legal para hacerlo. Como resultado, comete tantos errores que se juega la vida. Y, sin duda la de sus seres queridos, algo que la película ya no tiene en cuenta. Además, la protagonista actúa de forma totalmente impulsiva: cambia constantemente de opinión, no se preocupa por sus seres queridos, se deja llevar por sentimientos irracionales, como periodista carece totalmente de objetividad y ni siquiera sabe por qué hace todo esto. Podemos decirnos a nosotros mismos que así es como se comporta la gente en el mundo real (la gente normal no lo hace) y que el tema de Profile es de alguna manera relevante hoy en día (la película está basada en una historia real), pero ¿qué nos haría apoyar a un personaje tan inestable, descuidado, poco inteligente e irreflexivo? Absolutamente nada. Y aunque Timur Bekmambetov intercala este drama con interludios humorísticos, en esta película hay principalmente escenas serias que dan risa, lo que sin duda no era la intención del cineasta. Pero la mayoría de los espectadores están aparentemente satisfechos con la forma. [KVIFF 2018] (29.06.2018)

Desde un punto de vista técnico, una película extremadamente cuidada y detallada con un tema fuerte y un desarrollo impresionante, cuyo mayor problema, sin embargo, radica totalmente en los fundamentos: en la falta de fiabilidad de la situación inicial. Es difícil creer que un periodista de investigación intentaría infiltrarse en ISIS así de simple, con una preparación nula y sin orientación básica sobre los temas del Estado Islámico, pensar que podía hacerlo, y estar tan involucrada emocionalmente en todo el asunto. Lo segundo es que un experimentado terrorista, que transporta a varias niñas a la semana desde Europa a Siria, no mira de inmediato a una chica ingenua con un perfil de Facebook obviamente recién creado y un escritorio vacío donde no hay nada más que una imagen con un fondo recién descargado.
