Mia, una joven checa, empieza a trabajar como ‘au-pair’ en el extranjero para una familia acomodada que vive en una lujosa residencia. Su labor consiste en cuidar del hijo de la familia, que tiene diez años, mientras cumple una larga serie de extrañas normas que le dictan sus empleadores. Poco a poco, Mia empieza a incumplir sus propios estándares morales y a descuidar la relación con el niño que está a su cargo: todo ello como consecuencia de la sistemática manipulación a la que está siendo sometida. ¿Conseguirá Mia liberarse del yugo de esa familia sectaria y radical? The thing I liked about A Certain Kind of Silence is that even though it’s from a debuting director, it gives an impression of a modern, rather decent European drama, albeit without a usual feature of many similar films – emotions. However, in case of A Certain Kind of Silence it’s to the film’s advantage. It proves that we’ve got creators who are able to keep up with the times.

Una película misteriosa sobre el descubrimiento gradual del funcionamiento casi sectario de las familias con educación alternativa y los límites que estamos dispuestos a trascender en un esfuerzo por sobrevivir en la vida antes que nosotros y nuestro entorno, filmada intencionalmente en todos los aspectos, incluida la actuación, todos los lugares y la atmósfera general clínicamente fría, hay una falta de mayor intensidad dramática y un movimiento más fuerte hacia el objetivo. El problema también está en el personaje de la protagonista, quien, aunque inicialmente se opone a ciertas reglas de la estricta familia en la que trabaja como “au pair”, eventualmente aprende a aceptarlas con apatía, y así deja de buscar más detalles sobre el trasfondo tóxico de sus empleadores. La larga espera hasta el punto principal terminará antes de los subtítulos finales, que le darán a la película un sentido retrospectivo, y gracias a esto aprenderá de qué se trataba todo el tiempo. Respectivamente, ¿de qué podría tratarse si fuera más audaz, más dura y no terminara con solo algunas pistas inquietantes?

I have a lot of sympathy for the role of the young, ambitious Czech filmmaker who has to endure the grueling conditions of co-productions in an attempt to break out of the domestic milieu, only to get so carried away that you can catch those European role models right from your seat as they fly out of the screen. But if I only let my sympathies speak, that would be condescending of me, so tough luck – A Certain Kind of Silence undoubtedly has its individual merits, but a completely flawed concept that explains the background to absolutely everything depicted only with closing credits. Until then, it offers not a single clue as to what kind of film it is and dances along with a half-horror plot about a totally dehumanized community of rich people reminiscent of, say, the Dutch Borgman. Moreover, the whole film is heavily stylized in image and sound, so when we learn at the end that it is a variation on real events about a real organization, we realize that we have just been the victims of a really thorough manipulation, no matter what we might otherwise think about that organization. Personally, I have less of a problem with this than most people should, because I'm aware that film in general is manipulation. Still, here an imaginary line has been crossed.

Filmová výzva v karanténě - oblíbené herečky, Eliška Křenková. Elišku jsem si všiml a oblíbil už v Rafťácích a jejích následných menších rolích, takže mě nepřekvapuje její vzestupná tendence v herecké kariéře.... Rodinný film, Pustina, Všechno bude a nyní Tiché dotyky. Potvrdila, že utáhne film v hlavní roli. Film je to prazvláštní o prazvláštních lidech. Vždy si říkám, že už mě nic nepřekvapí. takové děsivé chování ve výchově dětí bohužel ale bude smutnou realitou. O to víc si cením, že takový film vůbec vznikl. Komorní, šedivý, s dusnou atmosférou. Navíc v tomto případě se můžeme hrdě bavit o evropském filmu, ten se v zahraničí určitě neztratí.

Ya me había fijado y enamorado de Eliška en Rafťáci y sus posteriores papeles secundarios, por lo que su creciente tendencia en su carrera actoral no me sorprende.... Película familiar, Pustina, Všechno bude y ahora Tiché dotyky. Ha demostrado que puede llevar una película en el papel principal. Es una película peculiar sobre personas peculiares. Siempre me digo que nada me sorprenderá. Lamentablemente, ese comportamiento aterrador en la educación de los niños será una triste realidad. Aprecio aún más el hecho de que se haya creado una película así. Íntima, gris, con una atmósfera opresiva. Además, en este caso podemos hablar con orgullo de cine europeo, seguramente no se perderá en el extranjero.

For some reason, the emotionless drama A Certain Kind of Silence grabbed me right from the start. I was waiting to see how it would end up, but I never would have thought that the movies would be based on a real Christian sect called the Twelve Tribes. The absence of emotion or catharsis seems to reflect the situation in today's over-tech society, where there is not much space left for feelings. The transformation of the main character working as an au-pair is almost unbelievable. I still can't help wondering how malleable a material it has become in the hands of an upper-class family. It should be noted that Eliška Křenková did a wonderful job playing the central role. (75%)
