Sinopsis(1)
El campo de concentración de Stalag Luft III es el más vigilado de Alemania durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. A él son conducidos los prisioneros aliados que ya habían intentado la fuga en otros campos, por lo que en el Stalag Luft III se dan cita impensadamente los prisioneros más expertos en fugas. Entre ellos el piloto testarudo e individualista Hilts (Steve McQueen), el cínico, granuja y leal Hendley (James Garner), el estoico y eficaz Louis The Manufacturer Sedgwic (James Coburn), el neurótico oficial de la armada Danny Velinski (Charles Bronson), que padece de claustrofobia y el oficial inglés Bartlett (Richard Attenborough), conocido como el Gran X. Pese a la advertencia hecha por el jefe del campo, el comandante Von Luger (Hannes Messemer) de que nadie podrá escapar del campo sin pagar con su vida por ello, los doscientos cincuenta prisioneros inician los planes para preparar una fuga colectiva. Perfect direction and performances (Richard Attenborough!) but the script felt very naive, especially considering it’s based on real events – I don’t think it would have hurt the film if the story was more realistic. If the entire first half was as uncompromising as the climax, I wouldn’t hesitate to give it the highest rating, but the impression that, instead of a German prison camp, they were fleeing from an easygoing boy scout camp bothered me quite a lot. Otherwise, I’m satisfied.

A blockbuster that has it all. A grand story with a huge number of characters that can really get under your skin. Drama and humor, tragedy and relief. In the end, the truth sounds quite dark. And yet, everything takes place in a relatively small space. There is little to criticize about this film. It is definitely worth watching.
