Set in a small Czech town, this charming relationship dramedy follows a quartet of string players who rehearse contemporary music together. Womanizer Tomáš has his eye on flighty cellist Simona, even though she lives with the introverted Robert. Meanwhile, history buff Funés refuses to date the opposite sex, believing he would either disappoint or be disappointed. The Quartette displays a wise and sly look at sex and attraction. There are not many films that portray Olomouc so charmingly. And Olomouc is beautiful. I am glad that this work by Krobot is so different from his debut. After all, there's nothing wrong with trying to understand today's thirty-somethings.

Miroslav Krobot y Lubomír Smékal se mueven en el terreno de un lenguaje cinematográfico distorsionado que, o bien no entiendo del todo, o simplemente no tiene nada de interesante. El intento de humor seco termina en una torpeza espasmódica. The Quartette da la impresión de querer convertir al público en los mismos zombis fantasmales que sus protagonistas. No estoy dispuesto a aceptar semejante juego y no veo el menor sentido en hacer, ver y promover esta película sin alma.

Película mágica llena de humor a la que estamos acostumbrados del Teatro Dejvická. A Krobot le ha sido posible hacer una película divertida sobre cosas tristes: la soledad obvia o oculta del ser humano contemporáneo. Aunque estuve estudiando en Olomouc durante cinco años, nunca me encariñé con esa ciudad, pero creo que Krobot logró capturar su atmósfera y hizo una bonita publicidad para Olomouc. Y Jiří Schmitzer aspira al premio a mejor actor de reparto del año.

I'm giving the Quartette four stars and now I feel like an outcast, but never mind. The film doesn't deal with any big issues, it’s about relationships between completely ordinary people. The pacing is slow, the action practically nonexistent, yet it isn’t boring, and the spare dialogue is hilarious. Plus, Funés the introvert immediately won me over. He was absolutely perfect. And it’s probably the first time I’ve seen Lenka Krobotová out of her typecast role.
