Sang-hyun (Song Kang-ho) es un sacerdote que pasa parte de su tiempo acompañando a los pacientes de un pequeño hospital de su ciudad. Respetado por su fe inquebrantable y su dedicación a los más necesitados, su mayor deseo es poder ayudar a salvar vidas, por ello se ofrece voluntario para participar en un peligroso experimento: encontrar una vacuna para un virus letal. Milagrosamente sobrevive a la terrible enfermedad, pero algo ha cambiado en él: se ha convertido en un vampiro sediento de sangre. Atormentado ante esta situación, se reencuentra con un viejo amigo de la infancia y su mujer, Tae-ju (Kim Ok-bin), quien despierta en él sentimientos nunca antes conocidos; lujuria, odio, egoismo. Pervertido, entretenido, sangriento, sexy, dramático, sarcásticamente divertido, psicológico e incluso épicamente largo (¿o simplemente innecesariamente prolongado?). Este collage de géneros y emociones, aunque hábilmente ensamblados para formar un todo único, sigue siendo solo una mezcla variopinta, a pesar de los grandes actores, líneas temáticas reflexivas (ocultas) y gran realización cinematográfica. Menos de todo y sin humor, podría haber sido más.

South Korean director Chan-wook Park's Thirst is an example of how to make a horror movie with a fresh take on the genre and how even vampires still have something to offer if you look at them in a different light. However, this movie is also an exercise in slow pacing that can even put you to sleep at times. Over two hours of running time are just a lot, and It is clear that this is not so much about the scary atmosphere as it is about what the moviemaker is trying to say.

I don’t want to be a heretic, but even though Thirst is a hundred times better and more original than Twilight, I had more fun with the latter – at its expense, yes, but at least something. Thirst is the kind of film that mixes genres so fiercely that their effects don’t multiply but actually cancel each other out. Clearly, it does work on many people, but not on me, unfortunately. I only enjoyed the last forty minutes or so, which raised it to three stars.
