Robert Jordan es un norteamericano experto en demoliciones que presta sus singulares habilidades a los guerrilleros antifascistas de España. Cuenta con la ayuda de una partida de combatientes formada, entre otros, por la enérgica Pilar, el peligrosamente indigno de confianza Pablo y la adorable e inocente María.
