Elin and her teenage friends are growing up in a smalltown Åmål. Nothing ever happens until Elin makes an unexpected move – she goes to the wrong party – and her life takes a new direction. Stuck in the midst of two love interests and a hilarious samlltown life, Elin tries to get to terms with her real self. En el momento en que una película «normal» comenzaría a acelerar su ritmo después de 20 minutos, ya llevamos 80 minutos en esta y luego termina. Lukas Moodysson apuesta por la sencillez, la honestidad y la credibilidad de las situaciones emocionales. Y también a las dos actrices que sobresalen. A los diecisiete años, me habría identificado con los problemas adolescentes tan sensiblemente retratados, y la película me habría atrapado. Hoy la he visto sin mucho movimiento emocional. Quizá sólo la espontaneidad de la escena del beso en el coche (hábilmente amplificada por la banda sonora) me gustó de verdad.

Nearly twenty years ago, the film must have been somewhat more surprising, and it had to have a slightly greater impact on the viewer. But nowadays, when any relationship between the same gender seems normal to me, it's more of a feel-good movie about finding a way to mature, which can be achieved in various ways. Two girls used this method.
