El portaviones nuclear USS Nimitz, bajo las órdenes del Capitán Matthew Yelland (Kirk Douglas), navega por el océano Pacífico en diciembre de 1.980 cuando un extraño fenómeno físico materializado en forma de tormenta abre un túnel en el tejido espacio temporal por el que el portaviones entra inevitablemente. Tras la conmoción inicial, desconocedores de lo ocurrido, la tripulación descubrirá por una serie de acontecimientos que se encuentra en el año 1.941, en plena II Guerra Mundial y concretamente en vísperas del ataque japonés a Pearl Harbor...Con todo un portaviones nuclear a su servicio y un reparto encabezado por Kirk Douglas y Martin Sheen, Don Taylor dirigió esta espectacular película de ciencia ficción con tintes bélicos basada en un gran guión escrito por David Ambrose, Gerry Davis, Thomas Hunter y Peter Powell.
