En 1979, un grupo de jóvenes cineastas se reúnen en una remota granja en una zona rural de Texas, para rodar una película para adultos. La película de explotación de los años setenta dirigida con más inventiva por un joven cineasta contemporáneo. Ti West sabe lo que hace mientras juega con el los espectadores y las técnicas del género, mezcla un poco de porno suave con un poco de slasher duro y no se olvida de ser un poco desviado. Pero lo más importante es que desarrolla la clásica premisa slasher de «los adolescentes cachondos deben morir» de la forma más mañosa de las últimas décadas. X no te asustará, pero cuanto más te sientas cómodo con el género y te guste un soplo de aire fresco, más disfrutarás la historia de los desafortunados visitantes de la granja malvada. Y pechos desnudos.

Jenna Ortega está en todas partes, tanto en Netflix como en HBO. Pero aquí, la protagonista es más bien Mia Goth, con su cara tan peculiar. Recordé la existencia de Brittany Snow después de unos quince años. Me gustó mucho la primera mitad, ¿por qué los que hacen las películas de terror aman tanto Texas?! :-) La segunda mitad se volvió un poco repugnante, pero las tres estrellas llevan un más. El caimán es excelente, es la mejor escena de natación...

¿Sabes cómo es cuando una película cumple prácticamente todos los requisitos para que la disfrutes totalmente, pero al final te deja frío? Esa fue mi experiencia con X. Sí, el tema es genial, tiene trucos visuales y de dirección, está bien interpretada, tiene submomentos interesantes, pero toda la película se desarrolla de una forma tan esperada, poco emocionante y sin sorpresas que simplemente no evocó en mí ninguna respuesta mejor que la apreciación de una sólida realización cinematográfica. Y es una pena en este caso, quería un poco más.

I didn’t quite expect to find such an interesting, ambitious and not very often explored theme at the centre of a horror murder mystery from the backstage of the amateur porn industry, one that even made me sympathise with the main villain at several points (well, until she went into full psycho bitch mode, that is). The cinematography is great, West, like in The House of the Devil, convincingly imitates the 1970s, plays with editing and delivers more than one strongly creepy sequence. Unfortunately, the heroes aren't exactly my cup of tea – even though they are portrayed quite effortlessly and easily recognizable from each other – so the first half was more like waiting for the inevitable carnage to finally begin. But after the first stab, things get beautifully brisk and horror-packed until the end. I’m not as thrilled as I thought I’d be, but I’m satisfied.

An attempt at ambitious horror that doesn’t quite work. For the first hour or so, up until the first murder, it's a great directorial ride with an imaginative composition of shots, a witty timing of scenes (the crocodile from a bird's eye view!) and a top notch casting, all original characters and I loved it all; that long wait for the peak was a five-star job. But then, as the spiral of violence begins, the story winds clichédly along predictable paths, the murders are anything but interesting, though in one West recalls Fulci, and it all culminates in scenes you really don't want to see (gerontophilic sex). It's a film of two halves, and the first one, where it escalates, paradoxically outweighs the second one by a head; sometimes less is more.
