Un thriller magníficamente absorbente, con la atmósfera de un pueblo perdido australiano, y con un carácter posapocalíptico realista (es decir: no de fantasía) con mucho funcionamiento social sombrío. Además, me gustan mucho estas obras en los que nos metemos en la piel de los personajes a pequeños pasos. Pero cuanto más sutil se vuelve El cazador (The Rover), más fútil se vuelve en algunos diálogos pretendidamente filosóficos, y más insatisfactorio es su final. Es como si él mismo admitiera en el resultado (y lo considerara su punto fuerte como autor) que es todo una m*erda.

(49th KVIFF) The tempo is easy-going, but the atmosphere is gripping, with the dirt, the desert, the hirsute hero, the endless Australian roads, the isolated buildings and the redneck post-apocalyptic population. Pearce and Pattinson are great. And it’s got some balls, as the midget will tell you. So, pretty satisfied, though Tarantino’s hype (OMG! OMG! the best post-apocalyptic movie since Mad Max) was, as expected, exaggerated, if not downright bollocks, as it’s usual with him. The final twist is (especially for me, those who know me will understand) utterly absurd, though the protagonist’s prior behaviour gives it at least some motivation.

Michôd doesn’t make things much easier for the viewer and without any explanation he follows Guy Pearce and his retarded partner (Pattison finally finds his feet as an actor and as a village idiot is entertaining and completely natural) in the hunt for a stolen car, heading daringly toward the twisted finale. The rosy future is just roads and sand or an ugly human caricature with a gun. The first half hour before the main characters meet makes watching more difficult. Many will find it terribly boring, but I quite liked this naturalistic road movie.

A slower and less functional affair than, for example, The Road (though similarly inhospitable, dirty, raw), its biggest flaw is that it wants to be occasionally cynical and deliberately far-fetched, but it doesn't really work. Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson are surprisingly work, but otherwise, this bizarre post-apocalyptic road movie is average and not innovative or entertaining in any way.

Quentin Tarantino ha dicho de esta película que es la mejor película posapocalíptica desde la original Mad Max. Y felicito a David Michôd por conseguir producir un concentrado de aburrimiento al cien por cien, de primera clase. El cazador (The Rover) es la nada, una película ensimismada, que te tendrá esperando en vano cualquier tipo de giro y recordando sombríamente el buen rato que pasaste con Mad Max. Al menos la escena final lo mantiene a flote y tiene sentido. ¡Qué cosas dices, Quentin! [KVIFF 2014]

El antihéroe principal Guy Pearce corre por la Australia postapocalíptica en busca de un coche robado, ayudado por un enfermo mental llamado Robert Pattinson. Si al menos hubiera dicho unas palabras al principio y explicado lo importante que era el coche para él, toda la trama habría dejado de existir inmediatamente. El ritmo es lento y la película apenas dura una hora, pero de algún modo consiguieron alargarla hasta casi el doble. El personaje de Pattinson es mucho más interesante que el de Pearson, e incluso Pattinson lo interpreta mejor. Pearce se limita a fruncir el ceño todo el tiempo y el espectador se pregunta por qué hace lo que hace. Probablemente ni siquiera se la recomendaría a los fans del cine postapocalíptico, porque si no tuviera un título al principio explicando que la película tiene lugar diez años después de un desastre no identificado, no me habría dado cuenta de que se suponía que era una peli postapocalíptica.

"Rover" is definitely an interesting film, although it depends a lot on whether you enjoy slow, contemplative movies where every second feels like three seconds in reality. It drags on, but the story being told is not completely bad in itself. It just doesn't impress. I'm a fan of Robert Pattinson, and here he proves that he has stepped out of his box and is a capable actor. Guy Pearce has proven this a long time ago, he just tends to play similar types too often.
