El fantasma vestido con una sábana blanca (Casey Affleck) de un hombre fallecido recientemente regresa a su casa para consolar a su esposa (Rooney Mara), pero descubre que en su nuevo estado espectral ya no pertenece a un tiempo concreto y solo le queda observar con total pasividad cómo se le escapan lentamente la vida que conocía y la mujer que ama. Cada vez más perdido, el fantasma se embarca en un viaje cósmico a través de los recuerdos y la historia, enfrentándose a las eternas preguntas de la vida y a la inmensidad de la existencia. Un motivo muy bonito de lealtad, perseverancia y soledad de los fantasmas fijados en un ser querido y en un lugar del hogar. Pero el potencial de una interesante meditación filosófica acaba disolviéndose en una «ocurrencia de festival», cuyo significado ni siquiera su creador te explica. La película empieza como un frágil romance y, a través de toques de misterio, se desliza hacia la levitación existencial con una trama inútilmente sobrecargada y una conclusión insatisfactoria. Planos largos (en su mayoría estáticos), formato 4:3 con un diseño de producción minimalista, palabras mínimas y una gran atmósfera.

Yeah, it’s high art and whatnot, but to be clear, I’m going to give a list of things that I find a lot more entertaining and fulfilling than watching A Ghost Story: a deep cleaning of my living-room and kitchen, a voluntary visit to the dentist, clipping my grandma’s toenails, looking for Atlantis at the bottom of Devil’s Lake, half year studying for my final examination in mathematics, a marathon of Jaromír Soukup shows, running a marathon in freezing temperatures, washing dishes with cold water, going to a restaurant that didn’t get even one star from Zdeňek Pohlreich, going to a party as designated driver, working in a call centre, fishing in a dried-up lake, mushroom hunting in a housing estate, trying to convince prime minister Babiš to stop stealing.

Casey Affleck muere al comienzo de la película y pasa el resto de la historia (a excepción de algunos flashbacks) debajo de las sábanas, en forma de fantasma. La primera parte es brutalmente aburrida (predominan los planos largos estáticos en los que pasa poco, una secuencia de cuatro minutos en la que Rooney Mara come un pastel solloza) y la segunda parte es terriblemente confusa y extraña, porque en ella salta salvajemente en el tiempo. Si lo entendí bien, fue solo porque otro personaje de la película me lo explicó de antemano, y quién más sabe si no. Existen alrededor de media docena de ideas brillantes en toda la toma, pero cada una de ellas se usa solo marginalmente y luego se elimina de la vista. Es una pena, la fuerte atmósfera de la película definitivamente no falta y funciona como una extravagancia para festival, pero desde el punto de vista de la película, A Ghost Story se desmorona desesperadamente y al final se queda buscando en vano un significado.

I had no idea what I was in for when I started watching the film. I was all the more curious. Well, it didn't last long. Once again, it turned out that I’m not enough of an intellectual to appreciate the hidden qualities of this film. The beginning was unbelievably slow. The filmmakers embellished it with absolutely breathtaking static shots without even a trace of movement, and I started to have a bad feeling about it. After such an opening, the film continued at the same frantic pace, and the FFW button became my faithful companion, thanks to which I managed to bring the running time down to a tolerable sixty minutes. A very boring sixty minutes at that.

"Přízrak" is definitely not a movie that will appeal to everyone. Its pace is truly so slow that at times you will just stare, wondering if the picture has frozen. The scene with the cake is the best example of this. But despite being almost wordless, the film manages to convey something to you and leave an impression on you.

I was just waiting for the dude to build, like, a barn or a chemical plant and finally get some serious voyeurism going. An extraordinarily bad film (not in the sense of having a bad effect on the viewer, because it doesn't have any effect) that is neither arthouse, nor alternative, nor original, nor festival, nor bizarre. It's just bad and boring. The only moment I identified with a character was the Rooney Mara eating seance she puked after. That amount of pie and depression would probably get anyone. [10%]
