A typical night for a group of war veterans at the local VFW turns into an all-out battle for survival when a teenage girl runs into the bar with a bag of stolen drugs. Suddenly under attack from a gang of punk mutants looking to get back what's theirs - at any cost - the vets use every weapon they can put together to protect the girl, and their VFW, in the biggest fight of their lives. Es evidente que Joe Begos se sube a la ola del Asalto a la comisaría del distrito 13 de John Carpenter con esta película, lo que es bastante evidente por el estilo de los créditos iniciales y la elección del tema musical, por no hablar de la premisa argumental prácticamente idéntica. Aquí solo se traslada con gracia a un bar de veteranos americanos, asediado por una banda de narcotraficantes y una horda de yonquis desahuciados. Y la matanza puede comenzar. A diferencia de Bliss, la segunda película de Begos de 2019, aquí tiran de la película personajes universalmente simpáticos interpretados por actores veteranos (no solo) del cine de serie B, y sus interacciones de diálogo son divertidos de ver. Al parecer, todos ellos disfrutaron bastante del rodaje, en algunas escenas incluso parece que sus explosiones momentáneas de risa y sacudidas de cabeza fueron una reacción espontánea a la acción en el plató y a la frenética actuación exagerada de sus compañeros. Si tengo algo que criticar a Begos es, de nuevo, un énfasis excesivo en el estilo. La cámara oscurecida y la iluminación azul-roja en algunas escenas parecen innecesarias y a veces hacen que la acción sea bastante confusa, aunque entiendo que por otro lado era para cubrir el menor presupuesto y quizás ayudar a hacer que la sangre parezca sangre. En cualquier caso, me gusta tener este tipo de entretenimiento de serie B de vez en cuando.

Joe Begos is obviously a very big fan of John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 (which is a good thing, of course) and his crew of veterans is awesome. But he could have done with a bit more money, because the action, though intense and grindhouse-like, is also pretty slow. The VFW ultimately works better in those moments when Stephen Lang, Fred Williamson, William Sadler, Martin Kove and the rest are sitting in a pub reminiscing about the time they fought for a better world than when they have to slice up an army of drugged-up crazies who want to ransack their place. But as a throwback to the B-movies from the 80s, it's very cool.

After the recent Bliss, the talented Joe Begos has made another decent effort, set in a pub that will be defended by a bunch of veteran cops (Stephen Lang!) against drug-addicted punks. It's kind of a simple grindhouse affair that feels like it's straight out of the 90s and serves up a really decent helping of gore, with limbs flying through the air and blood splattering all over the pub. Decent fun for one viewing and the most brutal film of 2020 so far. I would have liked more polished visuals here, but it’s still good. 6.5/10

VFW is an American production that is nothing more than a simple horror-action B-movie and any other expectations can surely only lead to bitter disappointment. However, it is quite gory, and the characters are OK, even if their lines and dialogues are not world-beating. Plus, there are enough action-packed scenes to keep you from getting bored.
