Freaks

A lo largo de la primera mitad, que se lleva a cabo en un mundo, cuyas leyes se mantienen en secreto frente a la audiencia con sorprendente perseverancia al menos hasta la mitad del metraje, bastante minimalista con las figuras de padre e hija, escondidos en los alrededores de una casa cerrada, alrededor de la cual se crea una atmósfera de incertidumbre y quizás justificada, pero también quizás solo un miedo paranoico a un enemigo desconocido. En la segunda mitad, la verdad aflora, mientras que una serie de motivos hasta ahora vagos, poco claros e ilusorios finalmente se complementan con significado y contexto, a los personajes se les asignan objetivos específicos establecidos y eventualmente habrá más escenas de trucos de acción, que sirven para la historia pero nunca se usan solo para su efecto. Elementos que conocemos de largometrajes estadounidenses con cientos de millones de presupuesto, se utilizan de forma imaginativa y original en beneficio de una historia notablemente contada e inteligentemente construida, que se estrenaría en varias secuelas o en una serie de televisión, y que está dominada por una gran actuación de la talentosa Lexy Kolker de nueve años. Recomiendo no enterarse demasiado del argumento de la película de antemano y no ver los avances. Freaks es algo engañosa: se podría decir que durante la primera mitad confunde al espectador sobre lo que realmente está pasando, y lanza una serie de motivos confusos y personajes extraños (casi todos parecen inquietantes e ilegibles), para llegar a un desenlace sorprendente en la segunda mitad, que da sentido a lo anterior y va bien con las emociones del espectador. Bruce Dern, en el papel de heladero burlón, está genial, y sus interacciones con Emil Hirsch proporcionan a la película frases ingeniosas e hipérboles, sobre todo hacia el final. El tratamiento más original de los motivos de los blockbusters de Hollywood en una pequeña película indie que, al mismo tiempo, se mantiene alejada de ellos y los desprecia con su ingenio. La sorpresa del año. Concebida, primero, para plantear preguntas y mentir artísticamente con las formas, luego sorprender revelando un mundo cinematográfico original, y después involucrar emocionalmente y jugar con el espectador de la manera más justa posible. Todo ello sin una sola escena efectista, para transmitir una experiencia explosiva, con una cascada de ideas novedosas. Excelente actuación de la pequeña Lexy Kolker. At least once a year, there is a film that no one expects much from, but in the end it is a pleasant surprise and Freaks delivers a lot of value for money. A beautifully crafted mystery film that is strange, unsettling, and secretive from the start, but also suspenseful and entertaining. The film raises some interesting questions and gradually answers them with unexpected and imaginative twists as it progresses. The performance by the young Lexy Kolker is perhaps the best by a child actor since Jacob Tremblay in Room, and the finale is unexpectedly quite action-packed and bloody. If the film had, say, a $20 million higher bigger budget, we'd all be sitting in the cinema right now applauding, but maybe we'll see that in a possible sequel! The less you know, the better for you. Just in case anyone is reading this comment as the first, I’d like to repeat the advice of previous commenters: if you don’t know anything about this film, avoid finding anything about it and, for God’s sake, do not watch the trailer. At least the entire first half greatly capitalises from throwing the viewer into the whirlpool of a weird story where they can’t figure anything out – who, what, why, how? At the beginning, the only thing we know is that a little girl called Chloe lives together with her strangely behaving father (?) in a kind of dilapidated building, and that she’s forbidden to go outside. And this dark paranoia, which is soon complicated by a series of other mysterious motifs, is only very slowly given some order. What is not slow at all, though, is the pace at which the plot moves forward. There’s always something happening; twists alternate twists, ideas alternate ideas. Although in the end the main motif turns out to be ordinary and trite, the way it’s presented, from its point of view and with such balls, is something that we’ve probably never seen before. There are times when you can see that a million or two more in the budget wouldn’t have hurt, but overall it’s a lot of fun. (29.11.2019)
